SUPPORT TO THE WEST- A RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Support to the West

In a significant stride towards educational equity and mental well-being, Addie’s Afrique Foundation has expanded its outreach to the rural communities of Mmeradane and Apropronso in Ghana's Western Region. This initiative aims to support underprivileged children through literacy programs and mental health support, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

Bridging the Literacy Gap

Ghana has made commendable progress in improving literacy rates. As of 2021, approximately 69.8% of Ghanaians aged six years and older were literate. However, disparities persist across regions. For instance, the Greater Accra Region boasts a literacy rate of 87.9%, while other regions, including parts of the Western Region, lag behind (asetenapa.com).

Recognizing these disparities, Addie’s Afrique Foundation has introduced a comprehensive literacy program targeting students from Primary 4 to Primary 6. The program encompasses:

Writer’s Club: Encouraging creative expression and writing skills.

Reading Club: Promoting reading habits and comprehension.

Public Speaking Club: : Building confidence and communication skills.

Initially focusing on Primary 4 students, the program aims to foster a culture of literacy and learning in these communities.

Program Benefits

Mental health is a critical component of a child's educational journey. In Ghana, mental health issues among youth, such as depression and anxiety, are prevalent and often linked to factors like bullying, maltreatment, and psychological vulnerabilities (regig.org).

To address this, Addie’s Afrique Foundation has partnered with Dina’s Global Impact Foundation to provide mental health support. This collaboration focuses on:

  • Mental Reset Programs: Helping children overcome psychological barriers to learning.
  • Social Empowerment Initiatives: Building resilience and self-esteem among students.

By integrating mental health support into the educational framework, the initiative ensures a holistic approach to child development.

Leadership and Community Engagement

The project is led by Master Clifford Osei Amparbeng, Co-Founder of Addie’s Afrique Foundation and Project Lead for the Literacy Club. He emphasizes the importance of quality education in rural areas and its alignment with SDG 4.

Miss Daisy Addowaah Ofori, Executive Director and Co-Founder, highlights the program's benefits, including internal competitions among schools and scholarships for outstanding students to pursue secondary education.

Regional representatives, including Master Jephathah Brew (Greater Accra) and Master Samuel Akuffu (Western Region), have pledged their commitment to the initiative's success. Master Obed Otu Oyor, Chief Technology Officer, has also introduced digital literacy components, providing students with access to tablets and technology to enhance learning.

Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals

This initiative directly contributes to SDG 4, which aims to 'ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.' By addressing both literacy and mental health, Addie’s Afrique Foundation is tackling multiple targets under SDG 4, including:

  • Target 4.1: Ensuring free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education.
  • Target 4.2: Providing access to quality early childhood development and pre-primary education.
  • Target 4.a: Building and upgrading education facilities that are child, disability, and gender-sensitive (uis.unesco.org).

A Collective Effort for Sustainable Change

The launch event in Takoradi brought together all executives and leaders of the foundation, symbolizing a united front in the quest for educational and mental health reform in rural Ghana. Through collaborative efforts and community engagement, Addie’s Afrique Foundation is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for Ghana's children.
